It is definitely a time for improving upon things we already claim ownership of in our homes. This is no throw away decade, conserve, repurpose and recycle are the buzzwords for right now. That means crafty ideas to take an item that is no longer really “doing it for us” or that have been worn out are priceless to us. I know I am looking at my home decorations and furnishings in a whole new way, and clamour to collect inventive tips on how to make things last or how to make them over.

One area in which such tips have been extremely useful for me and have resulted in quite sensible results is the pillow makeover. Just a couple of years ago I would not have thought twice about ditching pillows that appeared ragged, or outdated. Purchasing new decorative pillows was such an inexpensive way to spruce things up. But now, it is no longer about it being inexpensive, for we are not willing to part with any of our precious funds on anything frivolous. It’s all about buying the necessities, and nurturing what we already own.

Thus, while I was evaluating the things I had in my house that were not being used I picked out some crocheted doilies from a class my daughter took back in the day. I had always found them to be quite attractive, but the idea of putting them out as coasters or on headrests was just to old fashioned for our style. But now I could integrate them into another item that needed a boost.

I took a couple of my colourful pillows and attached the doilieswith the same colour thread. For anyone who does not sew, this could be done with glue also. I’ve since asked my daughter if she could remember how to make them, as I would love to affix some to the ends of our bedroom pillowcases. In my view, they look wonderful, and I think she was pleased that they were finally getting noticed.

For most people looking up information on sun faded wood floors, a way to repair them is what is of greatest interest. So let’s address that first. For wooden floors that were originally sealed and waxed, the process of sanding and resealing is the best route. It is well worth getting a sealant that contains sunscreen, yes they have those now you just have to know to ask for them.

If you are feeling up to it, you can hire a sander and purchase a kit to complete the work yourself. Otherwise, there are plenty of people in the business of doing this kind of refurbishment. Depending on the size of the room, or rooms this can be a pretty intense project, so gage accordingly.

Once they are back in tip top shape you should take steps to keep them as such. Close any window blinds, coverings or curtains to prohibit the damaging rays from getting in and doing their dirty work. Nobody expects you to keep things in total darkness all the time that would be missing the point. But, on days when no one will be in, or using that space do your best to make an effort to close things up.

Ok, found this fantastic idea and knew it should be shared. Make a side table in under an hour out of a small number of materials. Here’s the best part, it is made of wooden shutters, yes precious I know. As for the complete list of items needed to build one yourself:

4 of the same style of wooden shutters

16 regular screws

A single piece of wood cut to fit on top

8 stretcher bars

The rest is pretty self explanatory, take the measurements of the shutters when they are placed in an upright square. Then go and purchase stretcher bars of those dimensions, and have a piece of wood cut that will fit inside of that square. Once you have those, use them to form 2 squares, stand the shutters up in the square formation again and then insert the stretchers. On the op edge of the shutters drill two screws on each side through the bars and into the shutters. Flip this over, with the help of another set of hands, and repeat. Paint everything, and allow to dry fully. Next, pop the wooden top in between the top shutters, and your done.

When you first move into a house there are such aspirations to keep the exterior looking its best. It is not too long after that things change. You did not pass you your original wish of maintaining true curb appeal, but life takes over. Next thing you know there are mix matched garden decorations strewn about, sports equipment at the entryway, and garden tools lying about.

So, you started to plant something during the weekend, and got called away from it. Then, you and your kids returned home late after a long day at the park where you played all the outdoor games you could think of, but never retrieved the materials from outside the door. As for those garden decorations, you were given them as gifts, and felt compelled to put them out, “for a while”.

Well, you know what you have to do, whip things into shape. Follow that by laying some family “ground rules” for the exterior of the house. Name clutter as the enemy, and make a game of fighting it off. Create a chart that tracks who keeps things in order, and give a prize for such concerted efforts.

You can have that inviting house, that passersby admire, but a little clean up is in order. Once you have it up to standard, make it a goal for all who live in the house to maintain.

Sometimes the items in our homes need some attention, like a fan that wobbles, and we put off fixing them. In the case of the fan, maybe you put it off because it still sounds ok, and you think you have some time before it causes any real problem. Or perhaps, you just to not know what to do to make it function properly again. Well, say goodbye to the head in the sand attitude, and solve the issue instead of ignoring it.

Now, I am not going to use scare tactics to get you to take action. Not gonna tell you it could detach from the ceiling and come tumbling down on you, nope because I do not need to. Why? Because fixing it is easy enough, and once you know that you will be prompted to act….I hope.

First turn the fan off at the breaker. Use a ladder to put yourself at a level that will allow you to confirm the fan is securely attached. Should you see that it is loose, identify where the problem lies and tighten the screws that need it. Next, check on the blades, are they firmly screwed in, along with the blade mounts? If not, tighten as before. Get down, and turn the fan on again. If it is still not right, turn off at the breaker.

The last thing to check is if the blades are balanced. You will probably be able to discern if any are out of whack by eyeballing it. Gently bend the blade, or blades back to the proper alignment. If things still are not correct, you may have warped blades, and they may need to be replaced.

I am presently captivated by the idea of cork flooring. Perhaps it is because I visited Portugal this year, and encountered the miles and miles of cork trees, and cork products over there. Or, it might just be plain old coincidence that I came into contact with a cork floor at an expo and immediately fell in love. Oh who knows, but let me tell you about why it is so special, and maybe you too will hop on this cork flooring bandwagon.

This flooring is taken from the bark of the cork tree, possibly the very ones I passed on the winding roads of Aljezur, Rogil, and Maria Vinagre in the Algarve region of Portugal. There are quite a few different styles that this can be acquired in such as, wine corks, mosaics, and burled cork.

Most commonly the wine corks are done up in decorative patterns, and sometimes the corks are even in cross sections for more detailing. With the mosaic, well a variety of sizes, shapes and colours of cork are set out together to create a pattern. And finally, burled cork involves cork with a mottled appearance that is said to be similar to that of burled wood.

They are all magnificent in my opinion, and next chance I get; I intend to put in a cork floor. For each floor is automatically unique, no matter which variation you choose. And to me, that sounds delightful, and beautiful.

Some of the simplest, and least expensive home DIY projects involve paint. As we have all seen time and time again, a fresh coat of wall paint is one of the first things estate agents, and home improvement professionals will want before putting a house on the market. And why? Because they all know what a profound impact paint can have on the overall appearance of a house. So, if you are looking for a way to spruce your home up, are willing to put some time, effort, and potentially very little money into it, then go with a paint project. If you are feeling inspired, or creative then look into doing something less expected with the paint.

One way to bring oomph to an accent wall is do a pattern referred to as caning. First the entire wall the colour you would like for the lines to be. Allow to completely dry and follow by attaching two inch painter’s tape in a grid formation. Over that stick the tape on in a design of horizontal and vertical stripes three inches apart. With the tape still in place paint the additional colour you have selected to cover the majority of the wall. In our experience we have found that two different shades of the same colour works best here.
